What is the difference between a medical mask and a surgical mask?

The differences between ordinary medical masks and surgical masks are mainly reflected in different use scenarios, different filtration effects, and different materials and processing methods.

First, different usage scenarios
Surgical masks are highly resistant to bacteria and viruses. Surgical masks can be used to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases such as colds and flu. Medical surgical masks are usually used in patient facing environments such as medical outpatients, laboratories and operating rooms. Medical staff wear surgical masks at work with high safety factor and strong anti-bacterial and viral capabilities.

Ordinary medical masks are not required to block body fluids or blood, nor are they airtight, so they should only be used in general medical Settings. There is no high filtration efficiency requirement for particulate matter and bacteria, and the filtration efficiency requirement for particulate matter and bacteria is lower than that for surgical masks and medical protective masks. Ordinary medical masks do not have obvious protective effect on pathogenic microorganisms. They are usually used in ordinary environment and can be used to block particles other than pathogenic microorganisms such as pollen.

Two, material and processing method
Medical surgical masks: Medical surgical masks are usually composed of masks, ear bands and other components. They are generally made of non-woven fabric, which plays an isolation role through filtration. Polypropylene is the main raw material, with a fiber diameter of 0.5-10 microns, and it has good filter, shielding, insulation and oil absorption properties.

Medical masks: Most medical masks are made of one or more layers of nonwoven cloth. The main production processes are melt-blowing, spinning, hot air or needling, etc.

3. How to choose a mask correctly
1. In the case of COVID-19, if you go out in public places and do not come into contact with sick people, wearing a surgical mask is sufficient, but if you are likely to come into contact with sick people, you need to wear a medical mask with a higher level of protection.

2. When choosing masks, the appropriate grade type should be selected according to the transmission type and risk level of pollutants, not too high or too low. Medical masks with high levels of protection have good protective effects, but because of their high content of filtration materials and good tightness, long-term wear can increase the burden of breathing, resulting in breathing difficulties and other discomfort
